Former Indian opener, Wasim Jaffer showered praises on Shubman Gill, saying he played one of the most outstanding knocks. The India opener played a knock of 208 runs off 149 balls as India defeated New Zealand by 12 runs to win the first ODI of the three-match series. Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer said Gill played one of the most outstanding knocks, adding that the youngster played with a lot of maturity.
Talking about the same, Wasim Jaffer said, “Shubman played one of the most outstanding knocks. Somebody as young as Shubman to get that double-hundred and show that much maturity, especially with Kohli and everybody else getting out.”
Wasim Jaffer went on to say that apart from Gill, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner, scored runs at the pitch where everyone was struggling.

The former opener elaborated, “I think apart from Shubman Gill, Bracewell, and Santner, everybody struggled on that pitch. No Indian batter got more than 34. Up until Bracewell started hitting, it looked as if it would be hard to come in and hit the ball straight away.”Q
The 44-year-old said had Gill not batted through, India would have struggled to win the game, insisting that Gill very maturely stabilized his innings.
Describing the same, Wasim Jaffer said, “Had Tom Latham affected that stumping or taken that catch, India would have struggled to win the game. He was on 120-odd then and to restabilize his innings and getting a double-hundred, was a mature play from him. Making 208 out of 350 is an outstanding effort. If he hadn’t batted through, India wouldn’t have gotten to that score and it would’ve been difficult, given how New Zealand responded.”
Finally, Wasim Jaffer touched upon India’s choices for the opening spot, with both Gill and Ishan Kishan surpassing the 200-run marl for the Men in Blue.

You hand Gill an opportunity and gets a hundred and another double ton. So, some outstanding cricket and batsmanship from Indian players.”
