Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as Chairman of the BCCI Senior Men’s Selection Committee has been a story of remarkable success in white-ball cricket, but questions surrounding player management and selection policies continue to spark debate. As India prepares for the crucial two-Test series against Sri Lanka, former India opener Wasim Jaffer has shared a balanced assessment of Agarkar’s time in charge.

Agarkar replaced Chetan Sharma as chief selector on July 4, 2023, and has since overseen one of the most successful phases in India’s limited-overs history. During his tenure, India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026, won the 2025 Champions Trophy, and also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Men in Blue have established themselves as the dominant force in white-ball cricket, consistently outperforming their rivals in ICC tournaments.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer praised Agarkar for the team’s outstanding results, insisting that success in international cricket is ultimately measured by trophies.

“I think if you talk about winning, then this tenure has been successful. You are known by your results, and the trophies India have won speak for themselves. Apart from the 2023 ODI World Cup final, India have won the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy and then two consecutive T20 World Cups. The team has dominated white-ball cricket, and that reflects the quality of talent available,” Wasim Jaffer said.

While acknowledging the achievements, the former Indian batter also questioned several selection decisions and the way certain players have been handled by the selection committee. He believes communication with players has not always been transparent, leaving several deserving cricketers uncertain about their place in the national setup.

Jaffer specifically cited the cases of Mohammed Shami, Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and recently selected pacer Auqib Nabi. According to him, these selections have raised valid questions that deserve clearer explanations from the selectors.

“The way some players have been handled and some of the selections that have been made are certainly debatable. There is Mohammed Shami, Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and now Auqib Nabi, who wasn’t picked initially but was later drafted in as a replacement. These are decisions that need clarity. Players deserve to know why they are being selected or overlooked,” Wasim Jaffer added.

Although India’s white-ball record under Agarkar has been exceptional, the team’s performances in Test cricket have not matched those standards. India missed out on qualification for the 2025 World Test Championship final and also suffered disappointing home series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa during the cycle.

With Agarkar’s tenure extended beyond its original deadline, the upcoming Sri Lanka series could play an important role in shaping the next phase of India’s Test journey. While the silverware has strengthened his legacy, the selection committee’s approach to communication and player management is likely to remain under close scrutiny.
