Wasim Jaffer – The Ranji Man, calls it a day

Wasim Jaffer,  one of the legends of Indian domestic cricket after 25 long years, has decided to curtain down on what has been an incredible roller coaster of a career. The legendry Indian batsman called it quits and announced his retirement from all forms of cricket via Twitter.

 

There were clear signs of potential in 15 years old Wasim Jaffer, who scored a 400 not out at such a young age. Continuing his form, He scored a triple century in just his second game when he started playing for the Mumbai Ranji team. Jaffer rose to fame and slowly became a mainstay and a crucial member of the Mumbai team.

Comparisons to the legendary Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin came quite early in Jaffer’s career as both the right-handers played the game with a certain charisma and affection to the on the leg side of the ground.

Wasim Jaffer got his debut in Test cricket against South Africa in the year 2000. Being a home series, Wasim failed to create an impression as  Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald were too hot to handle for him. He was then dropped and later recalled in  May 2002 for a tour of the West Indies where he had a decent outing.

Jaffer also got a chance to play for the colored India jersey as he made his ODI debut against South Africa in November of 2006. He wasn’t given much opportunity because of his inability to be productive in the limited-overs format.

During his 25 years as a professional cricketer, Wasim Jaffer broke and created many records. In November 2018, Jaffer became the first batsman to cross the 11,000 runs barrier in the Ranji trophy. He has also surpassed Amol Muzumdar and is now the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy cricket.

Wasim also became the most capped player in Ranji trophy history surpassing Madhya Pradesh Devendra Bundela’s record during his appearance in his 146th match back in January 2019.

Wasim ended his domestic career playing two seasons for Vidarbha, helping them lift the trophy and before switching for the Maharastra Ranji team for two seasons.
