However, Ireland came with all guns blazing in the second game where Irish skipper Andrew Balbirnie scored a fine century to help his team win their first-ever ODI game against South Africa by 43 runs.
South Africa were needed to win this game in order to draw the series. They brought Quinton de Kock back in the playing XI and he instantly proved the decision right. De Kock shared a sensational 225-run opening stand with Janneman Malan.
De Kock got out after scoring his ton but there was no stopping Malan, who notched up his second ODI hundred and smashed Irish bowlers in all corners of the park.
Malan played a jaw-dropping shot over extra cover for a six, which left everyone looking for adjectives.
