The three-match ODI series between South Africa and England started yesterday (January 27) in the city of Bloemfontein at the Mangaung Oval Cricket Ground. While the hosts South Africa managed to win in the enthralling fixture, it was umpire Marais Erasmus who made headlines.

A video of umpire Marais Erasmus during the series opener went viral on social media which occurred during the 24th over, while South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje was bowling to centurion Jason Roy. Erasmus, who was standing as a leg-umpire, was not aware of the delivery and had his back turned towards the batter as well and only tuned back in after hearing the sound of the shot as well. The incident, however, grabbed the eyeball as the netizens bombarded the social media platforms with several memes as well.

However, as far as the game is concerned, South Africa did quite well, especially after England’s great start while chasing a massive total of 299 as well. England were 149 without losing a single wicket after the first 20 overs but the hosts made a fine comeback with the ball in the latter part of the game. Anrich Nortje starred for his side with as many as 4 wickets, while Rassie Van Der Dussen was their pick of the batters smashing a 111-run knock in the first innings as well.

“Player of the Match did his job, took two quick wickets and we really bounced back well after that. I was expecting at least one of the bowlers to do damage. We’re trying to shift our mindset from the result and more about how we want to play our game. We need the win, we need the points, but it’s also about how to go about our business.” said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma in the post-match presentation as well.
