West Indies are once again staring at the ODI World Cup Qualifiers after failing to secure a direct spot in the 2027 tournament. The two-time world champions have now found themselves in the qualification battle for a third consecutive World Cup cycle, underlining the continued struggles of Caribbean cricket in the 50-over format.

The latest blow came after Afghanistan strengthened its position in the qualification race by defeating Ireland in the second ODI of their ongoing five-match series. West Indies were already outside the top eight in the ICC ODI rankings, and Afghanistan’s victory effectively eliminated one of the remaining routes that could have helped the Caribbean side move into the automatic qualification spots.

For the 2027 World Cup, co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured automatic berths. The remaining eight direct qualification places are determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with September 30, 2026, serving as the cut-off date.

West Indies slipped to 10th in the rankings with 73 points following their ODI series against New Zealand. Bangladesh was ninth with 83 points, while Afghanistan occupied seventh place with 90 points. With the qualification window closing, West Indies’ hopes of breaking into the top eight have effectively disappeared.

The situation is becoming an increasingly familiar one for the West Indies. They failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup and had to go through the Qualifiers to book their place in the tournament.

The setback became even more severe four years later. West Indies failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup after suffering defeats during the Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe. Losses to Zimbabwe and the Netherlands in the Super Six stage ended their campaign, while Scotland’s victory over the Caribbean side confirmed their historic absence from the global event.

Afghanistan’s series against Ireland was particularly important to the West Indies’ qualification hopes. Ireland needed an almost perfect run, including a 5-0 series sweep, to remain in contention. However, the first ODI in Bready was washed out, effectively ending Ireland’s chances.

Afghanistan then secured a convincing 92-run victory in the second ODI. Rashid Khan was the star performer, claiming 6/34 as Ireland were dismissed for 207 while chasing 299.

West Indies are scheduled to face India in three ODIs, beginning on September 27, followed by matches on September 30 and October 3. However, even a 3-0 series victory will not change their qualification situation. For a team that won the first two ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979, another Qualifiers campaign would be a stark reminder of how far the West Indies have fallen in the 50-over format.
