A lot of time we have seen when a batsman walked on after getting dismissed but before the umpires’ decision. But have you ever seen a batsman left the crease after getting hit on the pad and that too when the ball pitched outside leg?
Recently, it happened during the Quadrangular A series at Bengaluru when India B was playing against South Africa A. It was the 9th game of the series on this Monday (August 27) where the visitors South Africa A was chasing a target of 158 runs.
The incident happened during the 18.5 overs when South Africa A was batting on 77/1. The left-handed no.3 batsman Sarel Erwee (batting on 20 runs) was facing the Indian leg-spinner Mayank Markande, whose delivery hit straight on the batsman’s pad. Instantly, the India B spinner and the other fielders appealed for an lbw dismissal which the bowler’s end umpire agreed but was not confident. Though the umpire slightly raised his hand, he still had to raise his index finger to give that decision in bowling team’s favor which he didn’t finish.
Reading the initial body language of the bowler’s end umpire, Erwee didn’t wait and walked on to the pavilion. Later, the replay showed that the ball pitched at outside leg and that means it was definitely not out. Probably, the umpire doubted that in the last moment and attempted to re-think and change that decision as not out. But Erwee’s leaving the crease at the immature stage brought a wicket for India B as the scoreboard was reading 77/2 in 18.5 overs.
However, it didn’t affect on South Africa A’s crucial victory as they successfully chased down the target in 37.4 overs after losing six wickets. The visiting side won the game by four wickets with 74 balls still remaining.
