Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer commented on the controversy surrounding Ajit Agarkar’s exit as chief selector as well. Media reports suggest Agarkar will not seek an extension after his contract ends on October 4, 2026. Reportedly, his decision was made due to differences with the BCCI over senior player handling. However, Ajit Agarkar’s committee planned a transition, dropping Rohit Sharma as ODI captain and handing the role to Shubman Gill. Reports also suggested the committee had decided to move on from Rohit as well. However, the BCCI backed Rohit and dismissed all rumours of his retirement.

“It is important for everyone to be on the same page. When one individual’s opinion becomes stronger, then it is a problem, be it the head coach, captain, or chairman of the selectors. Somewhere, you need to balance it out. Our Indian public is also emotional about big players. They get very sentimental. I am sure Agarkar would have a thought process for the betterment. But you need to balance these things out with the captain, coach, and everyone. You feel that if things are not going as per your opinion, it is better to move away. Maybe it was that. But these are speculations,” Wasim Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“In Rohit’s case, if he is playing, he will have eyes on the 2027 World Cup, and you need that experience. I said this again in Surya’s case as well. You removed him right after the World Cup. These things could have been handled better. Even Shami’s case. He still has to prove himself. This is saddening,” Wasim Jaffer again shared.

However, Wasim Jaffer also opened up on veteran India pacers Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He added that he was excited to see whether Shami would be picked for the away Test series against New Zealand as well.

“I am excited to look at the New Zealand series. I am hopeful for Shami. If he is not picked there, it is clear that selectors are looking beyond him. Even Bhuvi’s case is saddening. It feels bad when someone is performing, has good fitness, and the numbers are there. I have gone through these things, so I understand how it feels. Bhuvi should have played more. Test cricket, he had injury issues, yes. There, the workload is more. He may not have been able to handle it, but for sure, in white-ball and especially T20, his career should have been longer,” Wasim Jaffer cocnluded.
