When Yuvraj Fought Cancer To Defeat West Indies In WC

On this very date, 9 years ago, Yuvraj Singh showed the world why he is known as a true fighter.  In an extremely crucial match of the World Cup 2011, the Indian cricket team was set to play the dark horses of the tournament West Indies in the group stage of the ICC event.

Winning the toss, MS Dhoni decided to bat first on the Chennai wicket. Indian team soon found themselves in trouble losing the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar with the scoreboard reading 51/2 in the first 9 overs of the game. The ounce was now on the young Virat Kohli and India’s finest all-rounder Yuvraj Singh who walked on the pitch to come together and steady India’s ship.

Yuvraj Singh was visibly unwell during his stay at the crease as the vomited many times on the pitch and had to play in the unbearable heat of Chennai. The Punjabi all-rounder played his heart out stitching up a much needed 122 run partnership with Virat Kohli and stabilized India’s innings. Kohli lost his wicket after scoring a much deserved 50 but the warrior of Yuvraj Singh kept on batting.

He went on to score a ferocious 113 runs that included 10 fours and two sixes.  The cricketing fraternity sat back in awe as the warrior continued to play to the best of his abilities and help his national team progress ahead n the World Cup. Banking on the southpaw’s knock India managed to post 268 runs for the West Indies to the chase.

In the second innings, Yuvraj Singh again proved himself as an instrumental asset to the Indian bowling attack. The Soth paw picked up the crucial wickets of Devon Thomas and Andre Russel that helped India register a massive victory over the West Indies by 80 runs.

During the whole match, Little did we all know that Yuvraj Singh had a cancerous tumor growing inside his lungs.  The star Indian batsman was unaware of the same just like his fans but at the moment he did not let the tumor come in his way. and the illness that was later diagnosed as cancer to help India win the crucial game.

Yuvraj Singh scored a hearty century and bowled an economic spell along with 2 important wickets for the Indian cricket team in that match single-handedly winning the match for the boys in blues.

Yuvraj Singh delivered many more such match-winning performances in the competition for India and help the Dhoni-led team lift the World Cup trophy in Mumbai.  He was named the Player of the Tournament for scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets.

India’s off-spin bowler, Harbajan Singh has described a moment about this math in an interview post the World Cup which precisely shows the warrior spirit of India’s finest all-rounder, Yuvraj Singh. mentioned that Yuvraj Singh coughed up blood while he was vomiting in the dressing room, but refused to stand own and fight fr his country.

After the tournament ended, the Indian all-rounder was diagnosed with cancer. The warrior spirit was on full display once again as Yuvraj Singh fought cancer and made a dreamy comeback in the Indian team and international cricket soon. Yuvraj Singh hung us his boots and pulled down the curtains last year.  He represented India in over 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is, and 40 Tests, scoring more than 13,000 runs across all formats.
