Despite the enormous anticipation surrounding Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the teenage batting sensation was not handed his international debut in India’s first T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday, June 26. The 15-year-old, who earned his maiden senior India call-up after a sensational run of performances, will now have to wait at least one more match before potentially making his debut. India are currently playing a two-match T20I series in Ireland before travelling to England for a five-match series.

Suryavanshi had emerged as the biggest talking point ahead of the series opener, with many expecting him to become the youngest player to represent the Indian men’s team. However, captain Shreyas Iyer explained at the toss that the team management had decided to retain the players who had performed consistently in recent months, particularly during India’s successful 2026 T20 World Cup campaign.
India persisted with the established opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, while Ishan Kishan continued at No. 3. Shreyas Iyer slotted in at No. 4, followed by Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube. All-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar added balance to the lower middle order, while Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna formed the pace attack.

The decision not to include Suryavanshi sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many fans expressing disappointment after eagerly waiting to witness the youngster’s debut. Several users on X questioned the selection call, with one fan claiming that the decision had significantly reduced interest in the match.
Even though he missed out on the opening game, Suryavanshi remains one of India’s brightest prospects. The left-handed opener enters the tour in outstanding form after smashing a breathtaking 94 off just 29 balls in the India A Tri-Nation Series final against Sri Lanka A. He also enjoyed a dream IPL 2026 season, winning the Orange Cap after scoring 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a staggering strike rate of 237.30, including one century and five half-centuries.
