Former India fast bowler Munaf Patel has come out in strong support of MS Dhoni after fresh controversy erupted over the former captain’s dressing-room culture during his playing days. As old claims surrounding the Indian dressing room resurfaced in recent weeks, Munaf questioned why some former cricketers have chosen to speak about the issue only after retiring from international cricket. The debate gained momentum following comments from a few former India players about Dhoni’s off-field and dressing-room environment.

However, Munaf believes such allegations should have been raised at the time if they genuinely concerned those involved, rather than years after the events took place. Speaking to sports journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, Munaf defended Dhoni’s leadership and described him as a captain who trusted his players and gave them complete freedom to express themselves on the field.

According to Munaf, Dhoni never imposed his ideas on bowlers during matches. Instead, he encouraged them to execute their own plans first and stepped in with advice only if things were not going as planned. The former pacer credited Dhoni’s calm approach and tactical awareness as key reasons behind India’s success during one of the most successful eras in Indian cricket.

Addressing the recent hookah controversy, Munaf dismissed claims that players were ever forced to attend gatherings in Dhoni’s room. He revealed that several members of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad, including himself, never participated in those sessions, adding that every player had the freedom to make personal choices. “People talk a lot about MS Dhoni now. If you were genuine, you could have spoken back then. After retirement, anyone can say anything. It feels like people are only trying to gain followers or attention by targeting him,” Munaf Patel said.

The former speedster also pointed out that Dhoni has never publicly responded to such accusations despite repeated criticism over the years. He believes the legendary wicketkeeper’s silence reflects his personality and explains why he continues to command enormous respect within the cricket fraternity.

“Has he replied to anyone till today? Imagine what would happen if he started speaking. His silence is his biggest answer. That’s exactly why he is MS Dhoni,” Munaf Patel added.

Munaf further named several senior cricketers, including Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Ishant Sharma, while stressing that no one was compelled to attend any private gathering. He said players always had the option to stay away if they were uncomfortable.

“If someone didn’t want to be there, they simply didn’t have to go. I never went. Gautam Gambhir didn’t go. Ishant Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar also stayed away. Everyone had the freedom to decide for themselves,” he explained.

Reflecting on India’s historic 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, Munaf described it as the greatest achievement of his cricket career. He recalled the unforgettable celebrations inside the Wankhede Stadium dressing room after India lifted the trophy, saying the team’s biggest motivation was to help Sachin Tendulkar fulfill his lifelong dream of winning a World Cup on home soil. “There were legends in that dressing room. The atmosphere after winning the World Cup is something I can still picture today. Those memories will stay with me forever,” Munaf concluded.
