Former Indian opener WV Raman has backed the selection of a spin-heavy squad for the T20 World Cup, which is currently going on in the Americas. Talking about the nature of pitches in the West Indies and the recent performances in the IPL, Raman opined on the inclusion of four spinners in India’s squad. Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal will be there for the marquee event.
“Let’s not forget that a lot of thought would have gone into it. There must have been enough rationale and thinking behind those additions. Whatever you get to see on the West Indies pitches these days is more conducive to spinners,” Raman said to PTI.
He also opened up on the spinners’ stunning show in IPL on India’s hard-flat tracks. Chahal, Kuldeep, Axar, and Jadeja took 18, 16, 11, and 8 wickets respectively as well. Meanwhile, India have not lifted the T20 World Cup since their inaugural edition in 2007 under MS Dhoni as well. And, WV Raman believes the current squad has the potential to do so.
“It has a very good chance. We have a lot of brilliant cricketers who can be match-winners on their days. T20 is such a format where you need a bit of luck as well, especially in the knockouts, and that’s where experience also counts, which we have aplenty in the side.”

Meanwhile, Team India will face Ireland in their first match on Wednesday at Nassau County Stadium in New York. Raman backed the idea of expanding cricket to wider destinations as well.
“I think that is something that the ICC will consider. It will not be overlooked by them,” he addeed. “They will look at as many cost-effective measures and innovations to get more teams into the fold and venues under their bracket.”
He also opened up on Gautam Gambhir’s potential appointment as India’s head coach as Rahul Dravid’s tenure will end post-World Cup. And, Raman endorsed the idea, applauding Gambhir’s strategic acumen and leadership qualities as well.
“He will definitely be somebody who knows what to do. What he will deliver and not is something I cannot predict since I don’t have a crystal ball in my hand,” Raman shared. “But, as far as his acumen is concerned, he is good. He has also been a good captain in the IPL, and he is a good strategist.”
However, WV Raman also applauded wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who recently retired from all forms of cricket. Raman said Karthik is “extraordinarily entertaining” and lauded his dedication and resilience throughout his career as well.
“Fantastic career. He must be proud of it. And quite obviously, he doesn’t have to sit back and think like many others,” Raman said. “He’s been extraordinarily entertaining and also someone who is highly dedicated to cricket and has overcome so many challenges in his life. He’s always a chirpy character with a broad smile,” he concluded.
