Yashasvi Jaiswal’s promising knock came to a frustrating end on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston, as the young Indian opener fell for 87 — missing out on what could have been a statement century. Facing Ben Stokes in the 46th over, Jaiswal attempted an ambitious cut shot to a short and wide delivery but only managed a bottom edge straight into the gloves of wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Jaiswal’s dismissal was met with wild celebrations from the England captain, who pumped his fists and let out a roar after claiming a crucial breakthrough. The Indian dressing room, however, looked visibly disappointed, as did Jaiswal himself, who stood frozen for a moment before walking off in disbelief.

India, having elected to bat first, lost KL Rahul early for just 2 runs. However, Jaiswal anchored the innings with elegance, stitching together a 66-run stand with Shubman Gill for the third wicket. His innings was filled with delightful strokeplay — 13 boundaries in all — and for most of his 107-ball stay, he looked in complete control.
Yet, it was a lapse in judgment that cost him dearly. The cut shot, which had fetched him runs earlier, turned out to be his undoing. Fans were quick to react on social media, with many praising his fluent innings but criticizing the manner in which he got out.

The timing of the dismissal was a blow to India’s hopes of building a formidable total. At the time of his departure, India were 241/5, and his wicket offered England a vital opening to claw their way back into the contest.
