When a team needs to score quick runs, the responsibility often falls on the top-order batters to lead the charge with an aggressive mindset. Yashasvi Jaiswal embraced that role brilliantly in the final session of Day 2 of the fifth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, showcasing his attacking flair and putting the Australian bowlers under pressure.

In India’s second innings, Jaiswal took on Australian pacer Mitchell Starc with remarkable precision and power, smashing four boundaries off the very first over. His aggressive approach was evident as he cut a short, wide delivery from Starc over the slip cordon for the first boundary.

The next two balls saw him playing crisp cut shots to the boundary, showing excellent control and timing. Mitchell Starc tried to adjust, overcorrecting with a full delivery outside the off-stump. Jaiswal, ever-alert, drove the ball through extra cover for another boundary. His 16 runs from the first over became the most by any Indian batter in the opening over of a Test innings, setting a new record.

It also marked Starc’s most expensive first over in a Test match at home, adding pressure on the Australian bowlers. Earlier, debutant Beau Webster had played a key role for Australia, scoring a gritty 57 runs off 105 balls, including five boundaries.

His performance was one of the bright spots for Australia as they were bowled out for 181 runs, trailing India by just four runs. However, Jaiswal’s blistering start to India’s second innings indicated that the visitors were in no mood to let up, setting the stage for an exciting second half of the match.
