Jaiswal, ever-alert, drove the ball through extra cover for another boundary. His 16 runs from the first over became the most by any Indian batter in the opening over of a Test innings, setting a new record.

It also marked Starc’s most expensive first over in a Test match at home, adding pressure on the Australian bowlers. Earlier, debutant Beau Webster had played a key role for Australia, scoring a gritty 57 runs off 105 balls, including five boundaries.

His performance was one of the bright spots for Australia as they were bowled out for 181 runs, trailing India by just four runs.
