India’s rising Test star Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a major shift in his domestic cricket journey by choosing to part ways with Mumbai and represent Goa from the 2025-26 season. The 23-year-old opener, who has emerged as one of India’s most promising red-ball talents, officially informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his decision earlier this week.

The MCA accepted his request, effectively closing one chapter of his career and opening a new one with fresh opportunities. Though Jaiswal’s international schedule may restrict his availability for domestic fixtures, it’s expected that he will lead the Goa side whenever he’s not on national duty. Goa has reportedly offered him the captaincy, recognizing the leadership potential and top-order solidity he brings to the table.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Yashasvi Jaiswal said, “It was a very tough decision for me. Whatever I am today is because of Mumbai. The city has shaped my cricketing career. But Goa presented an opportunity I couldn’t ignore — a leadership role and a fresh challenge. I’ll give my best for Goa when not playing for India.”

However, the move seems to have been influenced by more than just opportunity. According to a report by India Today, sources close to the situation claimed that Jaiswal had grown increasingly uncomfortable with the internal dynamics of the Mumbai team. His relationship with senior players, especially captain Ajinkya Rahane, was reportedly strained.

The friction dates back to 2022, when Rahane allegedly reprimanded Yashasvi Jaiswal for sledging Ravi Teja after scoring 265 in a Duleep Trophy match. Last season, after a disappointing performance against Jammu & Kashmir, Jaiswal’s shot selection came under fire from both Rahane and coach Omkar Salvi.

The situation reportedly escalated when Yashasvi Jaiswal lashed out in frustration, even kicking Rahane’s kitbag. While Jaiswal has publicly maintained that the move was about new opportunities, sources suggest it was also a response to growing dissatisfaction with Mumbai’s team environment.
