Former India cricketer Yograj Singh showered praise on Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma for their commanding opening stand that powered India to a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four clash in Dubai. The young duo set the stage alight with a 105-run partnership, chasing down Pakistan’s 172-run target with seven balls to spare.

Abhishek smashed a stunning 74 off 39 deliveries, decorated with six boundaries and five sixes, while Gill added a quickfire 47 from 28 balls. Their fiery start not only gave India their highest successful chase against Pakistan in T20Is but also maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament.

Impressed by their fearless batting, Yograj Singh highlighted the duo’s potential to dominate even bigger targets. Speaking to IANS, he said: “The way Shubman and Abhishek are batting, even if the opposition posts 250, India can still chase it down—provided they stay at the crease for 12 to 15 overs. That’s the key.”

Yograj, however, also pointed out areas of concern, particularly Gill’s recent dismissals. “Shubman has been bowled twice on similar line and length deliveries. That’s something he must work on. The two are heavily dependent on each other, and India needs at least one of them to bat deep,” he added.

The former cricketer also shared a broader perspective on mindset and discipline in cricket.

“No player is ever bigger than the game. You may score hundreds or even double centuries, but as a cricketer you must always remain a student. The more you learn, the more successful you’ll be. Yesterday showed us the importance of batting deep—if Abhishek or Shubman had stayed till the 20th over, the finish would have been even more comfortable.”
