To get prepared prior to the five-match long Test series in English soil, Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara participated in this season’s English County cricket for Yorkshire. But apart from playing some good List A knocks, he mostly disappointed in the first-class cricket. However, the former English opener and present Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon believes that Pujara has no technical issue and will overcome quickly from the recent poor form.
In the recently concluded three-day warm-up game between India and Essex at Chelmsford, Pujara struggled and scored only 1 & 23. However, Moxon believes that the recent poor forms are not the big issue for Pujara.
Describing Pujara’s performances in this County season, Moxon told The Indian Express in an interview, “In the four-day stuff, he obviously didn’t get the volume of runs that we would have expected or we would have liked. He actually did really well for us in 50-over cricket. But at the start of the year, he had a couple of poor LBW decisions and ran himself out as well. That didn’t help him with his rhythm getting into the season. There was so much rain in the early part of the season when he played. The pitches were very seamer-friendly, so it was not easy for anybody to bat long to be honest. There’s a bit of reasoning behind him not scoring the runs. The pitches were a little bit tricky.”

Moxon didn’t find any particular technique issue in Pujara’s batting and has claimed that the things didn’t just get going.
The director quoted, “No, there’s nothing in particular from the technique point of view. His alignment and balance were fine this time. He worked extremely hard on his game. He was the model professional in that respect. He just didn’t get going. There were times when you thought, this is the day he’s going to go and make a big one. But then he found a way of getting himself out. He’s as frustrated as we were, but there wasn’t anything technical to be bothered about.”

Before this season, Pujara played for Yorkshire in 2015 and Moxon feels that the perfect gentleman hasn’t changed in this season. The former English cricketer further added that the right-handed Indian top-order Test batsman is very popular in the dressing room.
Moxon said, “He is a perfect gentleman. A hardworking professional cricketer and very popular in the dressing-room. That didn’t change at all. There’s a great fondness for Pujara in our dressing-room.”
