Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has opened up about his decision to join Delhi Capitals (DC) as an assistant and batting coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season, revealing that head coach Sourav Ganguly personally approached him for the role. Having played a significant part of his international career under Ganguly’s captaincy, Yuvraj admitted that accepting the offer was an easy decision. Delhi Capitals recently appointed Ganguly as their new head coach before bringing Yuvraj into their coaching setup.

The reunion holds special significance, as Yuvraj made his international debut under Ganguly’s leadership in 2000. The former India captain played an important role in shaping Yuvraj’s early international career, and the two have maintained a close relationship over the years. Speaking in a video shared on Delhi Capitals’ official YouTube channel, Yuvraj recalled how Ganguly approached him about becoming his assistant.

The former all-rounder responded humorously, suggesting that he had effectively been working alongside Ganguly for the past 25 years.”He (Sourav Ganguly) said, ‘Would you be my assistant?’ And I was like, ‘I’ve been your assistant for the last 25 years, so I’ll probably be doing the same job!'” Yuvraj Singh said.

The 2011 World Cup winner also explained that he had been preparing himself for a coaching opportunity over the past three to four years. Although he has previously worked individually with several players, joining an IPL franchise’s coaching staff will allow him to contribute within a complete team environment.

Yuvraj has mentored promising Indian batters, including Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, in recent years. His experience as an international cricketer and his understanding of modern batting could prove valuable to Delhi Capitals as they prepare for the upcoming IPL campaign.

During the interview, Yuvraj Singh also credited Ganguly for teaching him the importance of team bonding and creating a positive dressing-room atmosphere. He recalled how Ganguly encouraged young players to believe they could compete against the world’s best teams, including overseas.

According to Yuvraj, Ganguly was more than just a captain, acting as an older brother who guided him through selection challenges, international cricket and the demands of performing at the highest level.

Yuvraj Singh also has experience representing Delhi Capitals, having joined the franchise for ₹16 crore at the 2015 IPL auction. Across his IPL career, he played 132 matches, scoring 2,750 runs and taking 36 wickets. With Ganguly leading the coaching staff and Yuvraj bringing his batting expertise, Delhi Capitals will hope their new combination helps strengthen the team’s performance in IPL 2027.
