Shubman Gill showcased his class with a spectacular century, scoring 104 off 147 deliveries against England in the second innings of the second Test. The young opener, who had faced scrutiny for a prolonged lean patch, silenced critics with an innings that included 11 fours and two sixes. Gill’s century played a pivotal role in India setting a challenging target of 399 for England.

Before this innings, Gill had been under intense scrutiny, having failed to register a fifty-plus score in his last 13 innings. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri had warned Gill about the competition for his spot, especially with Cheteshwar Pujara in sublime form during the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Pujara, who was replaced by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the XI, has been waiting in the wings for a chance.

Commenting on the situation, Ravi Shastri had said, “It’s a fresh side, a young side. These youngsters have to prove themselves. Don’t forget, Pujara is waiting. He is grinding it out at the Ranji Trophy and is always on the radar.” However, Yuvraj Singh, who played alongside Gill for the Punjab Cricket team, came to the youngster’s defense.

Yuvraj congratulated Gill on his well-balanced century and advised him to let his bat do the talking. In a tweet on his ‘X’ account, Yuvraj said, “Rising to the occasion once again and playing a well-balanced knock! Good to see the three-digit mark. Well played my boy – let the bat do the talking.”

The century not only rejuvenated Gill but also played a crucial role in India’s dominant position in the second Test against England. With a target of 399, India has put themselves in a commanding position to level the series at 1-1. A victory in the second Test would set the stage for India to pursue a series win in the remaining three matches.

Gill’s innings, characterized by confidence and attacking strokes, has provided a much-needed boost to his confidence and affirmed his place in the national team. The 24-year-old faced criticism after returning to action post his recovery from Dengue during the ODI World Cup 2023. As India eyes a series win at home, Gill’s century has played a crucial role in steering the team towards that goal.
