Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has some unconventional advice for his protégés, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma—spend more time on the golf course. Yuvraj, who has closely mentored the young Punjab stars over the years, believes that golf is an ideal way for cricketers to relax, recharge, and regain focus, especially when battling a rough patch in form.

Yuvraj’s bond with Gill and Abhishek dates back to the Covid-19 lockdown, when the duo, along with wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh, spent weeks at his farmhouse honing their fitness and refining their skills. Since hanging up his boots, Yuvraj himself has embraced golf, investing in tournaments and actively promoting the sport among athletes.
“I’ve told them to play golf and I encourage them to play,” Yuvraj Singh said at a recent event, quoted by The Times of India. “It’s tough to find time, but the IPL is a great opportunity to hit some balls. They’re both superstars now, and they have to decide what helps them become better. Golf can be that outlet. I think it’s a great way to unwind, and it does wonders for the mind.”

When asked if he regrets not playing more golf during his career, Yuvraj Singh was candid: “I would have scored 3,000 more runs,” he laughed. “I tell young cricketers to try it because too much practice isn’t always good. Sometimes when you’re out of form, you over-practice, but relaxation is equally important.”

Yuvraj highlighted how countries like Australia, South Africa, and England have embraced golf as part of their cricket culture.
“The best players in those countries have grown up playing golf. During tours, they often play more golf than cricket to stay fresh. You can’t fix everything in three days of practice, but you can recover mentally and physically. Golf keeps you fresh, and I think all athletes—not just cricketers—should play it to bring out their best.”

With Gill now India’s T20I vice-captain and Abhishek Sharma ranked as the No.1 T20I batter, both are expected to play key roles in India’s title defence at the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. Under Yuvraj’s mentorship, the duo is not only sharpening their cricketing skills but also embracing a holistic approach to mental well-being and performance.
