When Yuvraj Singh joined in the jubilant celebrations with his teammates in India Champions – their triumph in the World Championship of Legends, he faced one more overwhelming test off the field: naming his all-time XI. A selection of just 11 meant to do without scores of players he looks up to. The surprise for all happened when he shortlisted only three Indians: Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in the list.

Yuvraj picked the immensely respected Tendulkar and incumbent India captain Rohit Sharma to open, with Kohli coming in at No. 4. At No. 3, he picked the former skipper of Australia, Ricky Ponting, whose glittering career included three ODI World Cup wins, in 1999, 2003, and 2007—two of those wins as captain.

At No. 5 and 6, Yuvraj picked two dynamic wicketkeeper-batters in AB de Villiers and Adam Gilchrist respectively. The lone genuine all-rounder of the team Andrew Flintoff occupied the No 7, making him the lone Englishman in Yuvraj’s XI. That was the first-ever bowling attack that brought together power and deadliness in the form of an array of maestros.

This included a left-arm pacer like Wasim Akram, who could make a ball swing at will, a right-arm seamer like Glenn McGrath, best known for consistency in hitting that menacing channel, a leg-spinner like Shane Warne, renowned for his leg-turning ability, and an off-spinner like Muttiah Muralitharan, with the highest number of wickets in international cricket.

Yuvraj undid the prior statement by including in that XI his legends, spread over generations and countries. On the other hand, an outstanding example of his leadership skills was the 2024 WCL Championship title, whereby he led the India Champions to a nerve-wracking five-wicket win over arch-nemesis Pakistan. To this very day, his brilliance as a player and leader has been an inspiration to cricket lovers worldwide—one timeless epitaph to the iconic greats of cricketing history.
