The heinous act with the late postgraduate trainee doctor on the night of August 9 shocked the nation and aroused its people to raise their voices for justice and more stringent laws against such crimes. The inhumanity in the commission of the crime shocked the nation as a whole, who rose to protest with voices all over the country, calling for stricter measures to ensure that no such act recurs.

Added to these voices raised against the crime is Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, who recently took to social media to express his feelings very strongly. Taking to his Instagram story on August 21, 2020, Chahal posted a loud and strong message, airing his anger and frustration over the incident. His post opined that extreme punishment should be meted to the perpetrators—maybe even more than just capital punishment.

“Hang till death? Nope. Break their legs at 90°, shatter their collarbones, injure their private parts, keep the rapists alive to feel all the horrifying torture and THEN HANG TILL DEATH,” read the post shared by Chahal on his Instagram story. The cricketer later decided to remove the story, possibly due to the intense reactions it generated.

It wasn’t Chahal alone from the cricketing fraternity who raised concerns over the issue. Other key cricketers like Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah have also hit the streets, underlining how the case has impacted people at large across the nation.

Coming back to Chahal’s current commitments, he turned out for Northamptonshire in One-Day Cup 2024. Immediately after a good performance during 2024 IPL, he made a fantastic comeback into competitive cricket, returning fine bowling figures of 10-5-14-5. Playing along with him is Prithvi Shaw for Northamptonshire. While Shaw may have to come up with something special to get the selectors’ notice, Chahal looks better placed in India’s white-ball squad for the T20Is against Bangladesh.
