The Global Chess League has garnered significant attention in the sports world due to its unique format and the introduction of the franchise system. Renowned chess players such as Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand have praised the tournament, ensuring fierce competition among participants.
Taking place in Dubai, the inaugural edition of the Global Chess League began on June 21 and will conclude on July 2. Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, serving as the SG Alpine Warriors’ ambassador, also attended the tournament and shared how chess has benefited him.
“Playing chess was my initial exposure to jerseys, and the sport has taught me patience over the years. This patience is crucial in cricket because there are times when you bowl well but don’t get wickets, and that’s when patience becomes vital,” Yuzvendra Chahal expressed.

Known for his passion for chess, Chahal emphasized the similarities between chess and cricket, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning in both games. He highlighted how chess teaches one to remain calm regardless of the situation.
“Chess and cricket share similarities, but in cricket, you can display aggression, whereas in chess, you must remain calm. It’s all about maintaining composure and focus in chess. For instance, while bowling, I can say something to the batsman, but in chess, you must remain calm. This quality eventually helps you in life as well,” explained Yuzvendra Chahal during the Global Chess League in Dubai.
Reflecting on his transition from chess to cricket and the significance of the Global Chess League, Chahal expressed enthusiasm for the tournament’s impact on the sport.

“In India, cricket is always followed, but the Global Chess League is like the IPL of chess. This being the first edition, it’s not fair to compare it with the IPL. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic initiative that will raise awareness about chess and the league,” Yuzvendra Chahal remarked.
He further stated, “The new format of mixed teams is also a fantastic addition. I believe that in about 10-15 years, we will witness new players emerging, and people will talk about the Global Chess League. I will be extremely delighted when that stage arrives.”
When asked about chess within the Indian cricket team, Chahal revealed that they often play chess during their travels. He jokingly claimed to be unbeatable within the team, mentioning occasional games with fellow player R Ashwin and their trainer Shanker Basu.
