Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor and former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan opened up on the challenges and takeaways from his team’s IPL 2025 campaign, particularly focusing on how they coped with early setbacks and what lies ahead for the franchise. After LSG’s defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their final league match, Zaheer addressed the media with refreshing honesty about the team’s journey this season.

Zaheer Khan acknowledged that LSG began the tournament with a clear goal—to make it to the playoffs. However, the path wasn’t as smooth as anticipated.

“At the start of the season, the primary focus is always to reach the playoffs. But we had to deal with early challenges, notably losing a few of our frontline bowlers due to injuries,” he stated. Despite those hurdles, the management made a conscious decision to stay optimistic and not let those setbacks define their campaign. “We didn’t dwell on the negatives. Instead, we tried to focus on putting together competitive performances and figuring out ways to win,” he added.

Reflecting on the season as a whole, Zaheer admitted it was tough to string together consistent performances, especially in the bowling department. While the batting lineup showed encouraging signs of stability, the bowling combinations were often experimental and unsettled due to the absences.

“We were constantly looking for the right mix, trying different options that could deliver under pressure. That was our biggest struggle this season,” he explained.

Still, Zaheer highlighted the positives, including strong leadership and the emergence of young talent. He was especially appreciative of the skipper, acknowledging his contributions despite an inconsistent run with the bat.

“He may not have had a prolific season with the bat, but his leadership was commendable. He ended the season on a high note, showcasing the kind of impact he’s capable of,” Zaheer said. “We have no doubt about his ability, and this phase will serve as a valuable learning experience for him.”

Looking ahead, Zaheer stressed that the end of this season is merely the beginning for LSG’s long-term journey. “This franchise is still young. The season may be over, but we see this as the start of a larger journey. There’s so much to build on,” he emphasized.

Zaheer also gave a special mention to young leg-spinner Rathi, calling him a “keen student of the game” and someone who’s constantly thinking and evolving. “He’s got the mindset, and with time, he’ll find that balance needed at this level,” he added.

In conclusion, Zaheer reiterated the importance of focusing on the positives and learning from the shortcomings. “As the season wraps up, it’s all about reflecting, learning, and strengthening the good things we saw. That’s how we’ll grow stronger as a unit,” he signed off with hope and conviction.
