Indian pacer Akash Deep has made a promising start to his international Test career, showcasing his potential as a reliable fast bowler for the future. Former Indian speedster Zaheer Khan believes that Mohammed Shami could serve as the ideal role model for the young bowler, given their similar approaches to the craft.
Zaheer Khan highlighted the parallels between Shami and Akash Deep, noting how both focus on the fundamental aspects of fast bowling—keeping their lines tight and attacking the stumps. According to Zaheer, Akash Deep could benefit immensely from emulating Shami’s methods and mindset to achieve long-term success on the international stage.
“Akash Deep’s approach is straightforward; he aims to bowl straight and target the stumps, much like Shami does. If he’s looking for a role model, Shami is a great example to follow. Shami has consistently made good use of the seam, and his success in international cricket is something Akash Deep should aspire to replicate,” Zaheer Khan shared with Cricbuzz.

At 27, Akash Deep has already demonstrated his potential in the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, where he took two crucial wickets on a challenging, overcast day, ending with figures of 2/34 from 10 overs. This performance follows his impressive debut against England in Ranchi earlier this year, where he picked up three wickets in the first innings, signaling his readiness for the big stage.
Zaheer Khan emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent seam position and sticking to the basics, traits that have defined Shami’s career. He also suggested that Akash Deep should engage more with other experienced bowlers to diversify his skills and enhance his effectiveness.
“Bowling good lengths and attacking the stumps have been key to Shami’s success. Akash Deep has shown similar qualities, and if he’s keen on adding more variety to his arsenal, learning from conversations with other bowlers would be beneficial,” ZaheerKhan added.
