International Cricket Council (ICC) made a new change in the laws of cricket earlier this year and introduced a unique set of law, where a team will be penalized by 5 runs if they try to do fake fielding.
However, in the ongoing India-Sri Lanka Test match in Kolkata, Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh chandimal tried to do something similar and faked a throw during India’s 53rd over. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar turned a ball towards cover, where Chandimal was patrolling, who dived to stop the ball and made a throw. But, he didn’t have the ball in hand, which was the fake fielding according the laws and India was short to receive five penalty runs.
However, umpires Nigel Long and Joel Wilson didn’t notice much about it and India lost their deserved five runs. At the same time, Virat Kohli looked so furious and pointed for five penalty runs at the camera.
This law came in headlines during the JLT Cup, a domestic tournament of Australia, where Queensland Bulls’ Marcus Labuschange was penalized for the fake fielding.
Despite not getting those five runs, India ended their innings at 172 at the lunch break of day three in Eden Gardens. Apart from Pujara’s fifty, Saha and Jadeja scored some crucial runs before Mohammad Shami’s cameo at the end.
