Sri Lanka, who finished the first innings of the first ODI with the score of 262 on Sunday in the series opener, went a step ahead to rack up 275, setting the tourists 276 to win the series. The hosts had a brilliant start as they stitched a 77-run partnership for the first wicket, however, quick wickets and the Indian spinners’ performance pegged them back.

But Charith Asalanka’s 65 and Chamika Karunaratne’s knock of 44 took them to a reasonably good total. The Indian leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal was India’s best bowler, ending with figures of 10-1-50-3, while Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar snared five scalps between them. India is currently leading the series as they chased Sri Lanka’s 262 in the first ODI with seven wickets and with more than 13 overs to spare.

During the chase, the visitors lost the last match performers for India, Ishan Kishan, and Prithvi Shaw in the first 10 overs itself and after that, they never managed to get back in the competition as such. However, Suryakumar Yadav and Manish Pandey made a solid partnership of 50 for the third wicket, but the unfortunate dismissal of Pandey in the 18th over almost sealed the game for Team India.
