Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh is not happy with Steve Smith’s comment over the exclusion of Glen Maxwell from the One-Day International squad for Ashes ODIs. The team was picked earlier in this week where Big Show was missing while injury-prone Chris Lynn made a comeback after coming back from a big shoulder injury.
Maxwell was a part of Australian squad that traveled India for a limited-over series but couldn’t manage runs to his name.
After his omission, reporters asked Smith about the same, who replied Maxy should ditch ‘funky stuff’ to concentrate on his batting. However, Waugh was not happy with the words of his current successor and lashes him out openly advised to keep such things private in the dressing room.
“I found it all a bit strange. There must have been a reason why Steve Smith said that but I’m not sure it needs to be a public comment,” said Waugh.
“As soon as you make a statement like that it does put a split between you and the player and it’s a pretty personal sort of comment that he’s not training hard which suggests he’s not professional.”
After winning the Ashes series, Australia will play a five-match ODI series against their traditional rivals from January 14 in Melbourne.
