Team India is hearing up for the multi-format Tour of England after winning the two-match T20I series against Ireland. The selectors will be keeping a keen eye on each player’s performance as there are only a few international games left until the T20 World Cup 2022. Mohammed Shami, a pacer, is reportedly not on the selectors’ radar, for the upcoming marquee event.

“Selectors are not seeing Shami for T20 World Cup as he is not fit for the format. Selectors want to invest in young bowlers and give them maximum chances before the World Cup in Australia. They might pick Bhuvneshwar Kumar as one of the senior bowlers but probably Shami could miss the Australia flight this time for the T20 World Cup,” a source told ANI.

The fifth Test against England was played from July 1 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, and Mohammed Shami is expected to play an important role in the match. The match is a part of the five-match Test series from last year that had to be postponed following the fourth Test due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Indian camp.

Notably, Mohammed Shami hasn’t made the squad since competing for the Indian team in the shortest format against Namibia at the T20 World Cup in 2021. Even last year his selection in the T20 team was questioned. Shami though performed quite well for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he provided them with important wickets in the powerplay.

Mohammed Shami set the tone for GT in the tournament by picking up a wicket on his first ball for the team. He also took a wicket on his last ball of the tournament. He finished among the top 10 wicket-takers but with Bhuvneshwar Kumar already there who can bowl in the powerplay Shami might not feature in the scheme of things for the WC.
