Hardik Pandya and Krunal are enjoying a break from competitive cricket. While the flamboyant all-rounder was partly given a break for the Bangladesh tour in December, Krunal last played competitive cricket for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in November. Hardik will begin the New Year, by leading India in a 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The T20I series, starting January 3, will see the big stars missing in action as the BCCI selection committee did not pick the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hardik was named the captain of the T20I side and will be serving as Rohit’s deputy during the ODIs against Sri Lanka.
The BCCI top brass is reportedly mulling handing over captaincy of the limited-overs cricket to Hardik Pandya, who is expected to lead India at least in T20Is consistently in the New Year. Hardik sought time to respond to the top officials’ line of thought for white-ball captaincy.

Hardik Pandya also led India in 6 T20I matches, making his debut as captain on India’s tour of Ireland in June. Pressure on Rohit has increased following India’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat. Fitness issues have bogged Rohit down as the skipper missed 5 out of 7 Tests played by India in 2022, including the recent 2-0 win in Bangladesh.
