Indian Premier League (IPL) has been discovering new benchmarks for the shortest format of the game and is also attributed to a lot of mid-game innovations. The strategic time-out is one such example IPL has used in the cricketing format successfully. Thus it comes as no surprise when the cash-rich league is considering a football like midseason transfer of players.

As per Mid-Day, the upcoming IPL season will have a transfer window midway through the campaign. As per the tabloid, the head of the IPL Governing Council, Rajiv Shukla, had confirmed the news about the same. As quoted in Mid-Day, Shukla said, “Yes, this time the IPL will see mid-season transfers.”

The reports suggest that the window would only be open for the players who have played no more than two matches till the halfway stage of the tournament. One of the officials was quoted by the tabloid asserting that there will be a five-day window when the franchises will get this opportunity to have the mid-season transfers. “The transfer will take place in between Match No. 28 to 42 and the transfer window will be open for roughly five days. The transfer will take place only if there is a demand for that particular player from another franchise.”

Delhi Daredevils assistant coach, Pravin Amre came in support of the move, as he opined that players would rather be happy to play the game than warming the bench. According to him, if a young player has interest from other franchises, then it is better to present his services instead of keeping him.

Amre explained, “Every youngster who comes into the IPL aims to play at some point. The transfer window is a great initiative by the IPL. Sometimes, players are bought in the auction but don’t fit into combinations. As a result, he has to be on the bench. In such a scenario, it makes sense to trade the player if he is not going to play in the tournament.”

Many more details remain unclear on this midseason transfer window, especially related to the fee to be paid to the player. In any case, this modification if introduced by IPL will make the upcoming 11th season even more exciting.
