Before the beginning of Australia’s New Zealand tour for the remaining matches of the ongoing T20I tri-series, Australia’s stand-in T20I skipper David Warner takes a couple of days off from the national squad. Before their next game of this T20I tri-series, Warner will join with the squad in New Zealand.

Australian head coach Darren Lehman confirmed the news by saying, “It will just give him a couple of days at home really. It’s always a challenge with the schedule as it is, but David is really keen to play as captain. So we’ll give him a couple of days off and get him to New Zealand the day before the game.”

Australia’s remainder T20I squad will travel for New Zealand on Tuesday while Warner will join with them on Thursday, a day prior of their next match against the hosts New Zealand at Eden Park (Auckland).

David Warner was handed the leadership for the Australian T20I squad after their regular skipper Steve Smith took a rest from the T20I tri-series.

Australia has already secured their spot for the final of the tri-series after winning their first three matches of this series which were played on their home soil.

The Australian left-hander opener David Warner is the only player to feature in all three formats for his national side in this summer. However, the 31-years old David Warner is currently facing bad patch in the limited-over formats. In the recently ended 5-match home ODI series against England, Warner had average only 14.60. In the ongoing tri-series, Warner managed to score only 6, 4 and 2 in the first three encounters.

Lehman praised Warner’s leadership quality by saying, “He’d obviously like some more runs but he’s been fantastic in the leadership role with the young guys. He’s been training hard … there’s no dramas at the moment. He can only do so much work … he’s been working so hard that it’s almost like (it would help) to just give him a couple of days away from the game.”

Lehman also not looked worried about the left-hand opener’s recent poor form in the limited-over formats. He said, Ricky Ponting (Australia’s new assistant coach) has been doing some really good work with him, so we’d expect him to come out of that rut pretty quickly.”
