In a bizarre incident, Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews was given out timed out during the World Cup 2023 group match against Bangladesh in New Delhi on Monday. Mathews was coming in to bat after Shakib Al Hasan had dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 25th over. However, Mathews took some time to adjust his helmet before entering the crease. Shakib appealed for timed out, and the umpires, after much discussion, gave him out.
This is the first time in international men’s cricket that a player has been timed out. The ICC rules state that the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball within two minutes of the previous batter’s dismissal.
Some cricket fans have criticized Bangladesh for poor sportsmanship, arguing that Shakib should not have appealed for timed out given that Mathews was only a few seconds late. Others have defended Bangladesh, saying that they were simply within their rights to appeal.

ICC Rule 40.1:
“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

It is important to note that the MCC rules are the standard rules of cricket, but the ICC rules may vary slightly for international matches. In the case of the World Cup, the ICC rules apply. Angelo Mathews’ dismissal has raised some important questions about the spirit of the game and the interpretation of the rules. It is also a reminder that players need to be aware of the latest changes to the rules.

Have to be ready to take strike in 2 minutes as per ICC playing conditions #Banvsl #CWC23

Could Angelo Mathews have just faced up for one ball without a helmet, then delayed and called for a replacement? Yes but, crucially, he didn’t do that

Why didn’t Shakib Al Hasan withdraw his appeal when Angelo Mathews explained the helmet issue delay? Sportsmanship matters, and this move was disappointing. Shameful action, Shakib. #CWC23 #SLvsBAN pic.twitter.com/YkIPQwFn87
