The chances of the South African premier pacer Dale Steyn would be available as a replacement of Kagiso Rabada in the third Test at Newlands next week have been discouraged after the fast bowler’s recovery suffered another delay. Kagiso looked to have been ruled out of the final two Tests against Australia on Monday after the ICC imposed a two-Test suspension on him.

Although South Africa is investigating the worthiness of an appeal, they look almost certain to be without Rabada for the second half of a series that is currently square at 1-1. While Steyn would have been a welcome addition to the squad in Rabada’s absence, his availability connected on whether he was able to play for the Titans in their Sunfoil Series fixture that starts on Thursday.

However, it was confirmed on Monday that Steyn has not recovered from a heel injury in time and will now target a return for the Titans in the final round of franchise games. Speaking before Steyn’s status had been revealed, South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis said that he hoped to have the paceman back in time for the fourth Test at the Wanderers.

After the conclusion of the second Test, Du Plessis said, “I’m not 100% sure where Dale is. From my understanding, he would have needed to play a game this week, which he didn’t, which would probably set him back for the third Test, I would assume.”

He further added, “Our plan, for him, was to play a game. But I would be praying extra hard that he would be ready for that third Test to make sure we can have him available if he (is fit). On the spot now, I would assume probably on the fourth Test.”

Steyn’s absence surely will make way for Morne Morkel into the side, having missed out on selection for the second Test to Lungi Ngidi. South Africa will announce their squad for the final two Tests later this week, with Chris Morris and Duanne Olivier expected to be included as cover for Rabada’s absence.
