South Africa posted a formidable first-innings total of 575/6 on Day 2 of the second Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Despite the big score, South Africa’s start with the ball turned rocky as Bangladesh began their innings with 10 runs off just the first ball on Wednesday, October 30, due to a combination of a no-ball and an unfortunate penalty.

Spin all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy, who had scored an impressive half-century, unintentionally cost his team a five-run penalty for running on the protected area of the pitch. When South Africa declared, Bangladesh was given a five-run advantage, starting their innings at 5/0.

Kagiso Rabada opened the bowling for South Africa but conceded an additional five runs off his second delivery, which strayed down the leg side and crossed the boundary as a no-ball. This left Bangladesh at 10/0 after just one legal delivery. Earlier in the day, South Africa’s batting lineup built a dominant foundation.

Resuming at 307/2, Tony de Zorzi scored a career-best 177, while David Bedingham added a steady 59 off 78 balls. Despite a sudden collapse, which saw them lose four wickets for 37 runs, Wiaan Mulder and Muthusamy stabilized the innings with a brisk 152-run stand. Mulder was exceptional, finishing unbeaten on 105 off 150 balls, while Muthusamy contributed a valuable 68 off 75 balls.

After an erratic start with the ball, Rabada redeemed himself by dismissing Shadman Islam in his first over and picking up a second wicket in his third. South Africa’s spinners, Dane Paterson and Keshav Maharaj, also struck early, reducing Bangladesh to a precarious 38/4 by the end of Day 2.

With Mominul Haque and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto holding on, Bangladesh trails South Africa by 537 runs, facing an uphill battle to avoid a follow-on. To have South Africa bat again, Bangladesh will need to reach 338 runs, a challenging task as the Proteas bowlers continue to apply pressure on a weary home side.
