Former India batter Aakash Chopra has expressed disappointment over India’s precarious position in the race for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final, stating that the team has only itself to blame for the complications. India recently suffered a crushing 10-wicket loss to Australia in the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, a setback that has significantly hurt their chances of qualifying for the WTC final at Lord’s next year.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra dissected the situation, suggesting it is a direct result of India’s inconsistent performances in red-ball cricket. “It’s a mess of our own making,” Aakash Chopra remarked, pointing to past missed opportunities that now loom large in India’s qualification scenario.

He particularly highlighted India’s 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand earlier in the WTC cycle as a critical turning point. The series defeat, Chopra argued, was a monumental setback for the two-time finalists. Adding to India’s woes, Aakash Chopra also mentioned the rain-affected draw against the West Indies, where potential points were lost due to unfavourable weather conditions.
“The West Indies match still comes to mind, where rain denied us a result, leaving us in trouble. However, the biggest headache is the 0-3 loss to New Zealand. If we had collected all the available points there, we would be in a much better position today,” Aakash Chopra explained.
Outlining the path forward, Chopra emphasized the importance of the remaining three matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“India has three matches left, and winning all three will eliminate the need to rely on other teams’ results. A 4-1 series win will confirm India’s place in the WTC final by the first week of January,” he said, highlighting the urgency for India to deliver consistently in the coming games.
The road ahead is challenging but still within India’s control, provided the team capitalizes on every opportunity in the remaining matches.
