Pacer Mohammed Shami is set to return to international cricket in India’s upcoming white-ball series against England. Named in both the T20I and ODI squads, Shami’s comeback marks his first appearance for the national side since the ODI World Cup in November 2023. The right-arm speedster has been recovering from a knee injury, making this return a crucial moment in his career.

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly expressed his delight at Shami’s recovery and return to the team. “I’m happy to see Shami fit because I think he’s probably the best bowler in the country after (Jasprit) Bumrah. He might be a bit nervous playing after a long time, especially with a knee injury, but the fact that he bowled extensively for Bengal in domestic cricket will help him in the games to come,” Ganguly said, as quoted by India Today.

Sourav Ganguly also highlighted how Shami’s return would ease the pressure on ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. “Shami is as good as anyone in the world. Having both Shami and Bumrah bowling from opposite ends makes a massive difference. They are vital to each other’s success in Test cricket,” the former captain added.

India sorely missed Shami’s presence in red-ball cricket during his absence. The team suffered a historic whitewash against New Zealand at home, followed by a 3-1 series loss to Australia Down Under.

While Bumrah shouldered the majority of the bowling responsibilities with remarkable performances, the lack of a dependable partner at the other end proved costly. With Shami now fit and available, India’s pace attack looks formidable ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Alongside Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, Shami is expected to deliver impactful performances. The trio’s synergy will be crucial for India’s success in the high-stakes tournament, running from February to March this year. Fans eagerly anticipate Shami’s return to his fiery best, adding depth and balance to the Indian bowling unit.
