Rohit Sharma’s much-anticipated return to domestic cricket after a decade ended prematurely, as Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umar Nazir dismissed him for just three runs off 19 balls. The Elite Group A Ranji Trophy clash between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir began on Thursday, January 23, at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai, drawing significant attention as India’s Test and ODI skipper opened the batting for the defending champions.

Facing Umar Nazir, a towering 6’4” pacer, Rohit Sharma appeared uncomfortable, struggling to adjust to the bounce on the surface. His dismissal came when he top-edged a length delivery straight to Jammu and Kashmir skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. Nazir’s wicket of one of India’s greatest batters provided a huge breakthrough for his side. However, the 31-year-old bowler chose not to celebrate the moment.

Later, Umar Nazir revealed the reason for his subdued reaction. “The first thought in my mind was… I am a big fan of Rohit, and that’s why I didn’t celebrate after taking his wicket today. If we win this game, it would be a proud moment because India’s captain is playing in the opposition,” Nazir told reporters.

Umar Nazir bowled an exceptional spell, finishing with figures of 4/41 in 11 overs. He also dismissed international stars Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube, contributing significantly to Mumbai’s collapse for just 120 runs. Yudhvir Singh also claimed a four-wicket haul, while Auqib Nabi picked up two wickets to round out Jammu and Kashmir’s dominant bowling display.

Shubham Khajuria (53) and Abid Mushtaq (44) played crucial knocks, while Mohit Avasthi stood out for Mumbai with figures of 3/41. The visitors will aim to extend their lead on Day 2 and maintain their stronghold in the game.
