As India prepares for a pivotal five-match Test series in England, set to begin on June 24 at Headingley, the focus has subtly shifted from experience to youth. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having gracefully stepped away from the longest format, a fresh chapter begins under the leadership of Shubman Gill. It’s a significant transition—not just in captaincy but in the emotional landscape of Indian cricket.

Among those feeling the change most deeply is Kuldeep Yadav, India’s left-arm wrist-spinner who has blossomed over the years with the guidance of both Rohit and Kohli. Reflecting on his journey, Kuldeep fondly recalled Rohit’s mentorship and unwavering support during tough phases.
“I had a special bond with Rohit bhai,” Kuldeep Yadav shared. “He always treated me like a younger brother, even outside the field. On the pitch, he would clearly explain what he expected from me. If something wasn’t right, he never hesitated to correct me. Sometimes he’d scold me, but it was always constructive—it lifted me when I was down.”

Kuldeep also offered insight into his early days under Virat Kohli’s leadership. Though Kohli didn’t play in Kuldeep’s debut Test against Australia in 2017 at Dharamshala, he ensured he was the one to hand the young spinner his cap—a moment Kuldeep cherishes.
“Virat bhai gave me confidence even before I bowled a single delivery,” Kuldeep Yadav said. “He made me believe I belonged at that level. I was raw and nervous, but his belief in me made a huge difference.”

The Indian squad will also be without spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement mid-series against Australia earlier this year. Kuldeep credited Ashwin for being a guiding force during his comeback.
“I learned so much from Ash bhai—he’s been a mentor in every sense. We’d talk endlessly about revs, run-ups, pace, angles—he never held back knowledge. That support has meant the world to me.”
