The third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Lord’s saw yet another chapter added to the growing controversy around the Dukes ball. This time, Indian captain Shubman Gill and pacer Mohammed Siraj expressed visible frustration over the quality of a replacement ball during England’s first innings on Day 2.

India had gained the upper hand early in the day, thanks to a fiery spell from Jasprit Bumrah, who removed Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes with the second new ball. However, by the 91st over, Gill raised concerns about the ball’s shape and asked the umpires for a change.

While the umpires obliged and replaced the ball, things didn’t go as expected. Shubman Gill was soon seen in an animated discussion with the officials, clearly displeased with the condition of the replacement ball as well. From the stump mic, Siraj’s irritation was loud and clear: “This is a new ball, seriously?”

Unfortunately for India, their complaints went unanswered this time, and England took advantage. Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse mounted a strong counterattack, bringing the total from 287/7 to 387 all out, frustrating the visitors.

When asked about the ball controversy in the post-day press conference, Jasprit Bumrah diplomatically sidestepped the issue. “The ball changes, I don’t control that. I don’t want to lose out on match fees, so I’ll avoid controversial statements,” he smiled. “Sometimes you get a bad ball, sometimes you get a good one. That’s cricket.”

Reflecting on his bowling adjustments, Bumrah added, “Not much changed technically. The wicket was a bit slow early on, but with the heat, it quickened up. In Tests, your basics remain – hit the top of off, swing it, nip it. That’s always the plan.”

As the debate over the Dukes ball continues to stir reactions, the players remain focused on adapting – ball by ball.
