The resurgence of left-arm wrist spin in India began with Kuldeep Yadav’s breakthrough at the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, where he claimed 14 wickets in six innings, finishing as the joint second-highest wicket-taker. His unique variations and ability to bamboozle batters soon earned him a spot in the senior Indian team, where strong domestic and IPL performances further cemented his reputation.

Over the years, Kuldeep evolved into a match-winner, playing pivotal roles in India’s 4-1 Test series win over England in 2024, the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, and the Champions Trophy 2025 success. His 3/19 in the T20 World Cup semi-final against England, which included the crucial wicket of Harry Brook, and his double strike against Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson in the Champions Trophy final, showcased his ability to turn matches single-handedly.

Despite these achievements, Kuldeep has recently spent more time on the bench, as team management has preferred spinners who contribute with the bat. Former India spinner Maninder Singh expressed regret over Kuldeep’s absence during the England Test series, claiming India could have won the series 3-1 rather than settling for a 2-2 draw.

“If Kuldeep had played in England, the English batters wouldn’t have read his googlies or leg-spinners. He would have made a massive difference, especially in the fourth innings,” Maninder Singh said.

Maninder also voiced concerns about Kuldeep potentially missing out in the Asia Cup, as selectors may opt for Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy, prioritising batting depth and mystery spin over wrist-spin expertise.

Over the past year, Varun Chakravarthy has emerged as a top performer, especially in T20Is, where he has claimed 31 wickets in 12 innings at an average of 11.25. His performances carried over to the ODI side, helping India secure the Champions Trophy 2025, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker with nine wickets in three matches.

Maninder Singh lauded Chakravarthy as India’s potential X-factor in the Asia Cup. “He’s a very smart bowler who reads batters well and adapts to different situations. He may seem calm externally, but he’s a thinker on the field,” he said.
