Dewald Brevis, affectionately nicknamed ‘Baby AB’, emerged as a surprise hero for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the closing stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The five-time champions endured a turbulent campaign plagued by injuries, including a major setback when pacer Gurjapneet Singh was sidelined. CSK’s decision to bring in Brevis as an injury replacement, however, proved to be a masterstroke.

The 22-year-old South African sensation lit up the tournament with his fearless batting. Across six matches, Brevis scored 225 runs at a blistering strike rate of 153, smashing 13 fours and 17 sixes while notching up two half-centuries. Apart from a rare duck against RCB, he showcased his ability to dominate top-quality attacks, instantly becoming a fan favourite.

In a candid conversation with AB de Villiers on YouTube, Brevis described his IPL journey with CSK as “incredible.” He expressed admiration for the franchise’s family-like culture, which he said made his experience unforgettable.

Dewald Brevis also spoke at length about his interactions with CSK legend MS Dhoni, praising the former captain’s humility and leadership style. “The one thing I can say about MS is his humbleness. Off the field, he gives time to every player, and that stood out for me,” Brevis said.

He revealed how Dhoni’s open-door policy created a welcoming environment for younger players. “His room door is always open unless he’s sleeping. I often found myself just sitting in his room, chatting about cricket, his hobbies, or simply observing how he goes about things off the field. Everyone knows his greatness on the field, but it’s his character behind the scenes that makes him so special,” Brevis added.
With his impactful IPL stint, Brevis has strengthened his reputation as one of cricket’s brightest young stars.
