India’s World Cup star Jemimah Rodrigues has reignited one of the most heartwarming pre-final promises in Indian cricket — a musical duet with the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. After guiding India to their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph, Jemimah took to Instagram with a playful reminder, saying she “can’t wait to sing together,” tagging Gavaskar and bringing his words back into the spotlight.

Before the World Cup final against South Africa, Sunil Gavaskar had shared on India Today that if India lifted the trophy, he would sing alongside Jemimah while she played the guitar.

“If India win the World Cup, she and I—if she’s okay with it—will sing a song together. She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along,” Sunil Gavaskar had said. Now that the dream has come true, Jemimah is ready for the promised performance.

In her video, Jemimah addressed the cricket legend with infectious charm: “Hi Sunil Gavaskar sir, I saw your message. You said that if India win the World Cup, we both will sing a song together. So I am ready with the guitar and hope that you are ready with your mic. Lots of love.”

What began as a lighthearted remark has become a moment fans eagerly await after India’s historic title win at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Jemimah’s journey to this point was defined by grit and flair. Her unbeaten 127 off 134 balls in the semi-final against Australia powered India to a record-breaking chase of 339 — the highest successful pursuit in women’s ODI history. Her crucial 167-run stand with captain Harmanpreet Kaur became the turning point in India’s campaign.

Though she scored a modest 24 in the final, Jemimah’s electric fielding and energy remained unmatched as India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to capture their first-ever ODI World Cup crown. Interestingly, this wouldn’t be the first time Jemimah and Gavaskar share the stage — at the 2024 BCCI Naman Awards, the duo performed “Kya Hua Tera Wada.” Now, with India crowned world champions, fans are eagerly waiting for their long-promised encore.
