Shubman Gill finally looked like he was finding his rhythm again in T20I cricket, showing glimpses of his elegant timing and fluent stroke play during the fourth T20I against Australia at Carrara Oval in Queensland on Thursday (November 6). But just when it seemed like Gill was ready to break free from his extended run of low scores, his promising start once again ended in frustration.

Nathan Ellis
Nathan Ellis bowled a brilliant spell

The Indian vice-captain scored a composed 46 off 39 balls, striking four boundaries and a cleanly-timed six. His intent was clear from the start—rotate the strike, punish the loose balls, and anchor India’s innings on a surface that offered both bounce and grip. For a brief phase, Gill appeared to be in complete control, setting himself up for the big score he has been chasing for months in T20Is.

However, Nathan Ellis had other plans. The Australian pacer produced a perfectly disguised slower ball that completely outsmarted Gill. The delivery was pitched at a teasing good length, inviting the batter to go for the cross-batted swipe he had been executing confidently until then. But the ball dipped late, slid under his bat, and crashed into the off stump.

It was a dismissal that summed up Shubman Gill’s recent struggles—promising starts, confident intent, but no substantial finish. With competition for the top-order heating up and youngsters pushing for opportunities, the pressure continues to build on Gill to convert these starts into defining knocks.

Still, the fluency he showed will give India hope ahead of their next assignments. A big score may not be far away, but for now, Gill’s wait continues.
