Former India cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has weighed in on the potential trade between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), involving Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja. According to reports, CSK is keen to acquire Samson ahead of the IPL retention deadline on November 15, with Jadeja and Sam Curran possibly heading to RR in return.

Speaking on Star Sports, Cheteshwar Pujara underlined the dual benefits of this move for CSK. “With this trade, CSK is benefiting in two ways,” he said. “Firstly, their top order, which struggled last season, will stabilize with Sanju Samson’s inclusion. His ability to anchor and accelerate will be vital at the top.”

Pujara also highlighted the long-term significance of the trade, especially considering MS Dhoni’s impending retirement. “We don’t know how long Mahi bhai will continue. But CSK is clearly planning for life after him, and Samson fits the bill perfectly as a wicketkeeper-batter,” he added.

While reports suggest Dhoni may continue in IPL 2026, his role might evolve, with potential bench appearances to usher in a smooth transition. This makes the arrival of Samson even more crucial in shaping CSK’s future core.

Discussing leadership, Cheteshwar Pujara backed Ruturaj Gaikwad to retain the captaincy, despite a modest team performance last season. “The way he has handled the captaincy—especially leading a side with senior players like Dhoni and Jadeja—is commendable. His inclusion as an opener and leader remains vital,” Pujara said.

Sanju Samson, known for his flair and composure, could emerge as a future captaincy candidate at CSK as well. “He’s definitely an option for CSK if this trade goes through,” Pujara noted, as the franchise looks to rebuild and remain competitive in the post-Dhoni era.
