Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has raised a serious concern that has been echoing through Indian cricket circles: Shubman Gill is running out of time to rediscover his rhythm. With the T20 World Cup inching closer and competition for spots heating up, Pathan believes Gill must start scoring consistently to justify his place at the top of the order—especially with Sanju Samson eagerly waiting for his opportunity in the playing XI.

Gill’s dip in form has become increasingly noticeable in the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa. After scoring just four runs in the series opener, the vice-captain was dismissed for a golden duck in the second match, further amplifying worries around his ability to provide India with solid starts.
Pathan, speaking on his YouTube channel, didn’t mince words: “The main talking point is Shubman Gill. He is the vice-captain and the World Cup is nearing, but the runs are not coming. He must score if he wants to cement his place in the T20I side. Otherwise, the pressure will only increase. Getting out first ball in the second T20I is not his natural game. When he doesn’t score, the pressure automatically mounts because Sanju Samson is sitting on the bench.”

Pathan highlighted that India needs clarity at the top, and unless Gill finds form soon, the team might struggle to generate momentum in the powerplay. This area has historically dictated India’s success in white-ball cricket. He added that if management backs Gill for the World Cup, scoring runs becomes non-negotiable.

He also cautioned that Gill’s prolonged struggles could force the selectors into a dilemma. While Samson remains a strong contender, replacing Gill too soon could create instability if Samson also fails to deliver. This makes the decision-making process even more delicate, especially given that World Cup planning is underway.
“But if India are backing Gill for the World Cup, it’s critical for him to make runs. If he doesn’t, it will hurt India because they won’t get the good starts they need. Plus, Gill will feel the heat because he’s part of the leadership group,” Irfan Pathan noted.

He further emphasised that Samson must stay mentally prepared, as opportunities may open up unexpectedly. However, Pathan remains optimistic about Gill’s ability to bounce back.
“Gill will score runs if he sticks to his natural game. But if he worries too much about someone waiting to replace him, it will only create trouble. The role of the team management becomes crucial here,” he concluded.
