Delhi Capitals created a refreshing break from on-field pressures with a lively team lunch in Mumbai, giving players and support staff a chance to unwind ahead of a demanding Women’s Premier League season. The special gathering was held at the popular Mlagudi restaurant and featured a surprise appearance by legendary musician Shankar Mahadevan, instantly turning the afternoon into a memorable off-field celebration.

The franchise also marked a significant milestone by unveiling its legacy cap numbers, a first in the Delhi Capitals’ WPL journey. Newly appointed captain Jemimah Rodrigues was presented with the No. 1 cap, a symbolic honour recognising her as the franchise’s first-ever pick at the inaugural WPL auction. The moment underlined DC’s intent to build a strong sense of identity and continuity within the squad.

The highlight of the event was an impromptu jam session in which Rodrigues shared the stage with Mahadevan. As Bollywood classics filled the room, the entire DC squad joined in, dancing and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. Rodrigues even picked up a guitar, much to the delight of her teammates, as music and laughter took centre stage. The session helped strengthen team bonding at a time when morale was crucial.

Adding emotional value to the occasion, Delhi Capitals also honoured players from previous seasons by presenting them with their respective legacy caps. Current and former squad members were recognised, making it a landmark event in the franchise’s history and a celebration of the team’s growth in the Women’s Premier League.

However, the cheerful off-field moments contrasted sharply with DC’s challenging start to WPL 2026. They began their campaign against defending champions Mumbai Indians, where they struggled to contain a strong batting display led by Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Mumbai posted 195/4, and despite a determined effort, DC were bowled out for 145, losing by 50 runs.

Their second match against the Gujarat Giants proved far more competitive but ended in heartbreak. After Sophie Devine’s blistering 42-ball 95 and Ashleigh Gardner’s 49, powered Gujarat to 209, DC responded with intent. Lizelle Lee’s fluent 86 and Laura Wolvaardt’s composed 77 kept the chase alive, but Devine’s late spell sealed a narrow four-run win for Gujarat.

Delhi Capitals finished on 205/5, remaining winless after two games and placed fourth on the points table. They will look to turn their fortunes around when they face UP Warriorz on Wednesday, January 14.
