India captain Suryakumar Yadav found himself at the centre of a social media debate after comments he made about Sanju Samson during a press conference earlier in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The remarks initially sparked criticism from fans online, but the narrative shifted dramatically after Samson delivered a match-winning performance against the West Indies cricket team. In a must-win Super 8 clash at Eden Gardens, Samson produced one of the finest innings of his T20 career, smashing an unbeaten 97 that powered the India national cricket team into the semifinals.

The wicketkeeper-batter’s knock, which included 12 boundaries and four towering sixes, helped India chase down a daunting target of 196 in the final over with four balls to spare.
Unsurprisingly, Samson was named Player of the Match for his remarkable effort. Following the match, Suryakumar Yadav publicly praised Samson for his composure under pressure. While some earlier criticism targeted the Indian skipper’s handling of team selection discussions, Samson’s father, Samson Vishwanath, came forward to defend the captain and highlight the support he has always shown his son.

“He has no ego. He acknowledges his teammates and supports them,” Samson Vishwanath said while speaking to Mathrubhumi. “He is a real captain. We all know how much Suryakumar Yadav supports Sanju.” Vishwanath also suggested that the captain’s earlier comments were misinterpreted and never intended to undermine Samson. “Whatever he said in that press conference was not intentional. No one has backed Sanju as much as Surya and Gautam Gambhir. Surya is also like a son to me,” he added.
Interestingly, the debate began when journalists questioned Suryakumar about whether Samson should return to the playing XI amid Abhishek Sharma’s struggles at the top of the order. During that exchange, the Indian skipper responded humorously while trying to explain the team’s selection balance.

“To aap bol rahe ho ki Abhishek ki jagah khilaun usko?” (So you are saying I should replace Abhishek with him?), Surya asked. When the suggestion shifted toward playing Samson at No.3, Suryakumar jokingly replied, “Should I play Sanju in place of Tilak Varma?” before laughing off the suggestion.
The conversation quickly went viral on social media, especially after Samson was later spotted spending extended time in the nets ahead of the next match.

Despite the speculation, Suryakumar remained firm that India’s team combination did not require sudden changes during the tournament. Ironically, Samson’s stunning knock against West Indies not only silenced critics but also highlighted the depth and flexibility within India’s squad as they continue their campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
