India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has offered an insightful comparison between the country’s T20 World Cup-winning squads of 2024 and 2026, highlighting how a shift in mindset—rather than skill—made the difference. While both teams achieved ultimate success, Suryakumar believes their core identities were distinct.

In a candid interview, Suryakumar Yadav described the difference between the two squads as minimal but meaningful. “There was just a ‘unnis bees ka farak’ (minor difference) between the two teams,” he said.

Reflecting on the 2024 triumph, Suryakumar pointed to the experience that defined the Rohit Sharma-led side, which also featured stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. “Woh experience wala josh tha,” he added, emphasising the calm confidence that comes from seasoned campaigners.

However, the 2026 squad, led by Suryakumar himself, brought a different kind of energy to the table.

“Idhar ekdum khoon garam tha ladkon ka,” he remarked, referring to the youthful intensity and fearless approach of the newer group. The transition became inevitable after Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja stepped away from T20Is following the 2024 title win, leaving the responsibility to a younger core.

Despite having less experience, the new-look squad thrived under pressure, especially while defending the title on home soil. Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged that managing expectations was one of the biggest challenges in 2026.

“This year, we had less experience but more enthusiasm. Most players were between 25 to 27 years old,” he explained. “It was important to explain what it feels like to win a World Cup in India—with thousands of fans cheering in the stadium,” he added, underlining the emotional and mental preparation required.

Despite the contrast in experience, Suryakumar believes the skill gap between the two teams was negligible, proving that belief and intent can be just as crucial as experience in T20 cricket.
