Sanju Samson has shared an honest perspective on the evolving mindset within the Indian dressing room following their triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. The wicketkeeper-batter admitted that being “selfless” wasn’t always his natural approach, but under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, that outlook has changed significantly.

India’s setup has clearly moved towards a team-first culture, where individual milestones have taken a backseat. Samson revealed that this shift was a conscious call taken by the leadership group and consistently communicated within the squad.
“That’s the way everyone is thinking now. It was a conscious decision brought in by our captain and coach in the dressing room,” Sanju Samson said. “The constant message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second.”

Samson’s journey in the tournament perfectly mirrored that philosophy. After a lean patch before the World Cup, he was initially left out of the playing XI. But as India entered a must-win phase, he was brought back into the side—and he delivered under pressure with three consecutive half-centuries.

“That automatically got drilled into each and every one of us in the team and that’s how we started reacting in every game,” he added.
Despite embracing the team-first ideology, Sanju Samson made it clear that he hasn’t tried to completely reinvent himself as a cricketer. Instead, he believes his authenticity remains his biggest strength.

“Honestly, I think that’s the true nature. I never wanted to be selfless. I think I’ve always wanted to be myself,” Sanju Samson said. From his early cricketing days in Kerala to performing on the world stage, his core belief has remained intact. “We play to win. For that victory, whatever you do should be helping the team first,” he added.
